the second link there is quite good... haven't seen that one before.

as to jerry noodling continuously on after the tune is over.... it seems like his way of letting the bass player (obviously a hired gun...?) know, he is not really interested in what he has to say -- "just get it straight bub, when he goes to single line picking, that is the beginning of the tune, otherwise it's a vamp. got it? good!"

First time for me too – what a treat! The bassist is no hired gun, his name is Jim Kerwin and he has been playing with Grisman for many years. My take on this clip, which is pure speculation of course, is that this is an early rehersal for the Garcia/Grisman album and they are working out the arrangement. Jerry’s awesome continued noodling (I could listen to that all day long!) is his way of contributing to the band conversation.

We are so very fortunate that Jerry had a good friend in David Grisman, away from the hubbub of the Grateful Dead world, and that Dawg documented and shared it with us.
